The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has called for a constitutional amendment to extend presidential term limits.
Appearing on Musanza’s Natulande programme, UPND member Cosmas Chileshe said any provision that would prevent President Hakainde Hichilema from standing for election after his term ends in 2031 should be removed.
He stated that there should be no law stopping the President from contesting elections if that reflects the will of the people.
Chileshe further argued that the current Constitution, which limits a president to ten years in office, is undemocratic.
However, in an interview with Diamond News, Alliance for Community Action (ACA) Executive Director Jimmy Maliseni has opposed the proposal, warning that it could lead to a presidency in perpetuity.
He has urged Zambians to resist any amendments to presidential term limits.
