UPND PRAISES POLICE HANDLING DURING ARCHBISHOP BANDA’S DEC APPEARANCE

.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has commended the Zambia Police for the professional manner in which they administered security during the appearance of Lusaka Catholic Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda before the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).

UPND Media Director Mark Simuwe says the party was satisfied with how law enforcement handled the situation, noting that there was no need for heightened tension or actions that could strain relations between the Catholic Church and the government.

He further welcomed the decision by the Catholic Church not to heed calls that could have resulted in unnecessary confrontation, adding that the limited turnout of clergy apart from a few individuals helped maintain calm, despite the presence of many politicians.

Mr. Simuwe emphasized that no one is above the law and cautioned against creating unnecessary tension in the country.

His remarks follow the summoning of Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda of the Lusaka Diocese, who appeared before the Drug Enforcement Commission on Monday, 5th January 2026, relating to a motor vehicle a development that has attracted national attention.
