UPND CLAIMS KASAMA MAYORAL VICTORY OVER OPPOSITION

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has won the Kasama Mayoral by-election after its candidate, Bywell, polled 17,647 votes.

Peter Yuda Chikweti of the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) came second with 14,303 votes, while Aaron Zimba of the Citizen First Party finished third after polling 4,405 votes.

Mukuka Kapambwe of the United Progressive People’s Party (UPPZ) followed in fourth place with 2,988 votes, as Joseph Mubanga of the Socialist Party came fifth with 2,211 votes. Mary Bukisa finished sixth with 472 votes.

Kasama District Electoral Officer Innocent Mutambo officially declared the UPND candidate as the newly elected Mayor of Kasama Council at 17:33 hours.

A total of 42,929 votes were cast out of 138,286 registered voters, reflecting a low voter turnout.
