UNZA OWING PARASTATALS, STATUTORY INSTITUTIONS K10.2 BILLION

The Auditor General’s report has revealed that the University of Zambia (UNZA) owes more than K10.2 billion in outstanding financial obligations as of October 2025.

According to the audit report on Parastatals and other Statutory Institutions for the financial year ended 31 December 2024, the University owes in access of K10.2 to statutory bodies, suppliers, and former employees.

Of this amount, K5.2 billion has been outstanding as far back as 2011.

Major creditors include the National Pension Scheme Authority, the Zambia Revenue Authority for PAYE, and unpaid terminal benefits.

The Report has also flagged UNZA’s failure to prepare and submit audited financial statements within the legally required timeframe.

Despite earlier assurances by management, the University had not produced audited financial reports for the 2023 and 2024 financial years as of October 2025, contrary to the Higher Education Act.

Meanwhile, the audit has exposed capacity challenges at the University’s Kitwe School of Nursing, where student enrolment has exceeded approved limits.
