UN SPECIAL ENVOY IN ZAMBIA ON 10-DAY MISSION TO ASSESS FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Irene Khan, has arrived in the country to conduct a 10-day assessment of issues related to the right to freedom of opinion and expression.

Her focus includes legal frameworks and policies concerning the safety of journalists.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, Ms. Khan says her mission is to engage with all stakeholders and provide recommendations to strengthen freedom of expression in the country.

And Mr. Haimbe has affirmed the government’s commitment to cooperating with the UN mission, emphasizing that the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) is firmly grounded in upholding the rule of law.

The minister also assured Ms. Khan that she would have full access to all relevant stakeholders.
