
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) says economic challenges are discouraging people from having children, according to its 2025 State of the World Population Report.
UNFPA Country Director Seth Broekman says over half of the 14,000 respondents across 14 countries, including Zambia, cited economic barriers as the main reason they cannot build the families they want.
He has shared that a young Zambian woman told UNFPA she has one child but will not have more due to financial instability, unaffordable housing, and the high cost of childcare and education.
And Officiating at the launch, Minister of Community Development and Social Services Doreen Mwamba called for sustained advocacy and investment in social protection, describing it as key to human capital development.
