Three people have died on the spot, while one has been seriously injured in a fatal road traffic accident involving five vehicles along the Kalulushi-Kitwe Road near Magazine area in Kitwe.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Rae Hamoonga has confirmed the accident, which occurred on Friday, September 25, 2026, at around 16:00 hours.
Mr. Hamoonga says the accident involved a Toyota Caldina registration number ADE 6887 ZM, a HOWO truck and trailer BAK 4328 ZM and ALL 4737 T, a Volvo truck and trailer CAH 7313 ZM and BAD 5171 ZM, a Mitsubishi Canter AFB 5139 ZM and a Toyota Alphard BAE 2013 ZM.
He says the Toyota Caldina, which was being driven by an unidentified man and had three passengers on board, was extensively damaged after it allegedly overtook improperly and collided with the HOWO truck which was coming from the opposite direction.
Mr. Hamoonga says following the initial collision, the Caldina spun and subsequently hit the Volvo truck, the Mitsubishi Canter, and the Toyota Alphard.
He says the driver of the Caldina and two of his passengers died on the spot from multiple injuries, while the third passenger sustained suspected head injuries and has been admitted to Kitwe Teaching Hospital.
He identified the drivers of the other four vehicles, identified as David Phiri, 45, of Chazanga, Lusaka, Simon Wandele, 56, of Chilanga, William Sinkamba, 45, of Kwacha East, Kitwe, and Gertrude Banda, 32, of Riverside, Chambishi, all escaped unhurt.
Mr. Hamoonga says police have instituted investigations and has urged motorists to exercise maximum caution, avoid dangerous overtaking, and adhere to road traffic regulations at all times.
