.

Controversial social commentator and activist Chilufya Tayali has issued a heartfelt and unreserved public apology for a series of statements he made on social media, admitting that his remarks were wrong, inappropriate and caused hurt and offence to many people.

In a statement released after what he describes as a lengthy period of self-reflection, guidance and counsel from well-meaning individuals, Mr Tayali has expressed regret over comments that led to criminal proceedings currently before the courts.

He has specifically apologised for drawing His Royal Highness Chief Mukuni into discussions surrounding the gassing incidents, acknowledging that he should never have involved the traditional leader in the matter.

Mr Tayali has also apologised to the Bemba-speaking people and the nation at large for remarks in which he referred to Bembas as “useful idiots,” describing the statement as offensive, insensitive and disrespectful.

Additionally, he has expressed remorse for comments that brought members of the defence and security services into political discourse, particularly regarding their emoluments, and apologised to President Hakainde Hichilema, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, security personnel and the Zambian people.

.

He has sought forgiveness from all individuals who may have been directly or indirectly affected by his statements, saying his period of self-exile has provided an opportunity for deep personal reflection and learning.

He has pledged to exercise greater restraint, respect and responsibility in future public communications and committed himself to promoting national unity while respecting the dignity and rights of others.
