SUSPECTED WATER POLLUTION IN KAFUE RIVER – CHILILABOMBWE

.

The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation has revealed a suspected incident of water pollution in the Kafue River in Chililabombwe.

In a statement, Minister of Water Development and Sanitation Collins Nzovu says the ministry has however temporarily suspended operations at the Kafue Raw Water Pump Station in Chililabombwe to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

Mr. Nzovu notes that the action follows initial observations of unusual turbidity in the raw water supply, which prompted immediate sampling and laboratory analysis.

He says further detailed assessments are currently underway in collaboration with relevant regulatory bodies and independent laboratories to determine the nature and source of the contamination, while preliminary test results remain inconclusive.

Mr. Nzovu has disclosed that in the interim, the ministry is supplying water sourced from underground dewatering operations, which has been confirmed to be safe for consumption and use.

He says strict monitoring protocols and safety measures remain in place to ensure the continued protection of public health.

He has since cautioned all stakeholders, particularly industrial operators, against any actions that could compromise the quality and safety of our water resources.
