Republican President Hakainde Hichilema says independent institutions such as the electoral bodies are key democratic pillars that must be allowed to thrive.

According to the President, such a system acts as a platform for people to participate freely in national affairs and choose leaders of their choice without undue advantage.

In his speech during a virtual Summit for Democracy, the President also emphasised the need for countries to have strong opposition political parties that offer checks and balances to those in power.

Other African Heads of State that spoke include Kenyan President William Ruto and his Botswana counterpart Mokgweetsi Masisi that have called for enhanced equality.

Zambia has been chosen as the first African Country to co-host the Summit for Democracy under the theme Free, Fair and Transparent Elections in Africa.
