A one year three month old baby has been allegedly sodomised and murdered by its stepfather in Siamungala Village of Chief Moyo in Pemba District, Southern Province.
According to Southern Province Police Commissioner Moono Namalongo, the incident occurred when the victim’s 20 year old mother left the baby in the stepfather’s care while she went to attend to business errands.
When she returned around 09:00 hours, she was informed that the child was still sleeping inside with the stepfather, who is the main suspect. Upon entering the house, she found the child lying unresponsive on the bed, while her husband was nowhere to be seen.
During subsequent checks, she observed injuries on the child’s body, including signs consistent with suspected sexual assault. She later transported the body to Mbabala area, where her parents reside, in preparation for burial.
Police further disclosed that before the burial could take place on November 15, 2025, she reported the matter to authorities. The body was inspected and confirmed to have injuries raising strong suspicion of sexual assault.
The body has since been deposited at Choma General Hospital mortuary, pending a postmortem examination to establish the actual cause of death.
Meanwhile, the stepfather who is the main suspect is on the run. Investigations have been launched to apprehend him and bring him to justice.
