Vice President Mutale Nalumango says holding a state funeral without the involvement of the current Head of State is not only inappropriate but could be considered treasonous, adding that the late president Edgar Lungu deserves a befitting and honorable ceremony.
She said the Zambian government is in discussions with the family of Mr. Lungu regarding funeral arrangements.
Speaking during the Vice President’s Question Time in Parliament, Mrs. Nalumango emphasized that Zambians should be allowed to mourn their sixth Republican President with dignity and respect.
She also warned those attempting to politicize the former president’s death, urging them to refrain from using the tragedy for political gain.
On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Mr. Lungu’s family, through their spokesperson Makebi Zulu, stated that the family preferred a private funeral, with President Hakainde Hichilema not in attendance.
