STAKEHOLDERS LAUD GOVT OVER NEW WOMEN’S CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

The Human Rights Commission and the Non-Governmental Organisation Coordinating Council (NGOCC), have commended the government for establishing the Diana Nalupya Correctional Facility in Roma.

Human Rights Commission Manager for Human Rights Advocacy, Simon Mulumbi, noted that most correctional facilities were not originally designed to accommodate female inmates and their children, a situation that negatively affects the mental and behavioral development of children exposed to such environments.

Meanwhile, NGOCC Executive Director Anne Mbewe Anamela emphasized that women in correctional facilities and circumstantial children have faced significant challenges over the years, leaving Zambia below internationally accepted minimum standards.

On Wednesday, Minister of Home Affairs Jack Mwiimbu unveiled a forfeited property in Lusaka’s Roma area, which is set to be transformed into a correctional facility for incarcerated mothers with children.

The facility, formerly a lodge, was forfeited to the state by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2022 after former Ministry of Health Chief Human Resource Officer Henry Kapoko was convicted on 69 counts of theft by a public servant.
