HRC REPORTS LITTLE PROGRESS ON ZAMBIA’S HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION
The Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Zambia has reported no significant improvement in the country’s human rights situation in its just-released 2023 report.
The document highlights persistent issues, including credible reports of extrajudicial killings, torture, and severe restrictions on freedom of expression and media.
Despite these grim accounts, the number of extrajudicial killings in 2023 showed a decline compared to previous years.
The report notes that cases of extrajudicial killings have decreased compared to previous years.
In 2021, the HRC recorded and dealt with nine cases, a number that surged to 26 in 2022. However, as of November 1, 2023, only three cases had been recorded, all of which are under investigation.
