
Police in Lusaka have arrested 29-year-old Kelvin Nyambe from Kuku Compound in connection with the alleged theft of assorted medicines from the newly constructed Out-Patient Department (OPD) building at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
According to Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga, the incident occurred on January 31, 2025, at approximately 17:00 hours, when Nyambe and seven other security officers from Arm Secure Security Company were assigned to guard the newly constructed OPD building, where various medicines were temporarily stored.
Around 23:00 hours, fellow security officer Ostein China went to the toilet within the building and discovered Nyambe packing medicines into a backpack and black plastic bags and immediately alerted the other security officers, who assisted in apprehending the suspect.
Among the stolen items recovered were 15 bottles of Panadol, each containing 1,000 tablets, 25 bottles of Ibuprofen, each containing 1,000 tablets, and 24 bottles of Dolutegravir (ART) tablets, each containing 90 tablets.
Mr Nyambe led the officers to the scene of the crime, revealing the location where the medicines were stored and the toilets where he had hidden the stolen items.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the total value of the stolen medicines, and Nyambe remains in custody at Kabwata Police Station.
