Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) Executive Director Maurice Nyambe states that the resignation of Thom Shamakamba from the position of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director General was inevitable.
Mr. Nyambe asserts that, given the gravity of the allegations against Mr. Shamakamba, it would have been impossible for him to continue in his role.
According to Mr. Nyambe, allowing Mr. Shamakamba to remain would have eroded stakeholder confidence in the ACC’s ability to combat corruption.
However, Mr. Nyambe believes that while stepping down is commendable, it is insufficient.
He references Dr. O’Brien Kaaba, a member of the ACC board, who has disclosed serious issues implicating Solicitor General Marshal Muchende and others within the state chambers.
Mr. Nyambe reiterates TIZ’s call for investigations into Mr. Muchende, stressing that these inquiries must not be compromised.
He advocates for the Solicitor General to step aside to allow for a proper investigation into the allegations against him.
Nyambe emphasizes that the government bears the responsibility of implementing measures to ensure a robust, effective, and united ACC that garners citizen confidence.
