A goods train carrying coal has derailed in Mazabuka District of Southern Province at a bridge over the Kaleya River severely damaging the rail line.
The train, which was travelling from the Southern to the Northern part of the country, reportedly derailed when the compromised bridge gave in causing more than three wagons to leave the tracks.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the bridge had been extensively vandalised by unknown individuals prior to the accident.
Fortunately, the train drivers escaped unhurt, and no injuries were reported.
