With schools having opened last week for the first term of 2023, pupils at Chiyabi Primary School in Sinazongwe District in Southern province will have to brave the scorching sun or brave the rains after a 1×2 classroom block collapsed in December last year.
According to Sinazongwe District Education Board Secretary Victor Mooyo, the school was built by the community in the 1970s using mudbricks.
Mr. Mooyo has disclosed to Diamond News that prior to the disaster, he held a meeting with other authorities after noticing huge cracks and that it was dangerous for pupils to continue using the infrastructure.
He adds that the affected structure was earmarked for demolition before the disaster.
Meanwhile, the DEBs has confirmed to Diamond News that due to the same disaster, pupils have challenges of learning space but was quick to mention that plans to construct a new structure and curb overcrowding in classes are underway.
Chiyabi Primary school collapsed following a heavy downpour late December.
