Some Mufulira residents on the Copperbelt Province have challenged President Hakainde Hichilema to issue an apology to citizens on the Copperbelt over the ‘unfulfilled’ promises he has been making on the two giant mining companies Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) since being ushered into office.
One of the residents, Leonard Sikanyika, says the President has visited Copperbelt province several times and made assurances that issues surrounding the two mines would be sorted out soon but currently, no investor has been seen on site to run the mines.
Mr. Sikanyika says the recapitalization of the mines should have been prioritized as the economy of the province depends on the operations of the mines.
Another resident, Reagan Kashinga, says the UPND government is running out of time in unlocking Mopani and KCM and that unlocking the two mines should not be politicised or be used as a political campaign tool for the 2026 general elections.
