POLICE OFFICER IN CHOMA ROBS AN AIRTEL BOOTH TENDER

A police officer in Choma District of Southern Province has allegedly robbed a booth attendant of cash and other valuables worth K32,566.00.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Moono Namalongo confirmed the incident, identifying the victim as Ms. Dorothy Malemia, 32, of Chandamali Compound in Choma District.

Ms. Malemia reported that a male suspect, who had concealed his face with a black mask and was armed with what appeared to be a pistol, threatened to shoot her before stealing a bag containing K28,886.00 in cash, a National Registration Card, earpods valued at K280.00, and three mobile phones worth K3,400.00.

The incident occurred on May 4, 2026, around 18:50 hours at Choma Town Centre.

Police say that on the material day, the victim, who operates a mobile money booth, reported for work at approximately 08:00 hours and conducted her business as usual. Before closing at about 18:50 hours, she secured her cash and mobile phones in a bag.

Shortly thereafter, a masked man approached her, threatened to shoot her with what appeared to be a pistol, and grabbed the bag before fleeing the scene. The victim raised an alarm, prompting members of the public to pursue the suspect, who was apprehended a short distance away.

The stolen bag, containing all the items, was recovered intact and returned to the victim. Police officers responded swiftly and took the suspect into custody. The weapon used in the commission of the offence was later identified as a toy pistol.

The suspect has since been detained, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
