A 26-year-old police officer of Mkushi District, identified as Rister Chuwa, has died by suicide using an AK-47 rifle.
The incident occurred on February 15, 2026, around 08:00 hours.
Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the officer retrieved the firearm from the front desk of TAZARA Mkushi Police Station when his colleague briefly stepped into another office.
The deceased’s elder brother, John Chuwa, said the family only received a phone call from a friend informing them that the officer had shot himself.
The funeral is being held in Chawama Compound, Lusaka, where his parents reside.
