POLICE IN KASEMPA PROBE ‘KIKONDO’-LINKED MURDER IN NYOKA CHIEFDOM

.

Police in Kasempa have launched a murder investigation after a man was allegedly buried alive during a suspected “Kikondo” (moving coffin) ritual in Shapela Village, Nyoka Chiefdom.

The incident, reported by Chief Nyoka on April 30, involves the death of 62-year-old Headman Bowas Ludiya, who was accused by a mob of using witchcraft to kill his grandson, 22-year-old Allan Mewa, who had drowned while fishing.

Despite the Chief advising against ritual practices, villagers forced a Kikondo ceremony, leading the coffin to Ludiya’s home. He was later buried alive with the deceased’s coffin placed on top of him.

Both bodies were found in the same grave. Police have opened a murder docket and are pursuing suspects, although both families have fled.

This is the second such incident in Kasempa District. Police condemn the act and will deploy officers for investigations and sensitization against mob justice and harmful traditions.
