Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people in Eastern Province has expressed dissatisfaction with the drafting process of Bill 7, citing inadequate consultation with traditional leaders.
The traditional leader accused the government of ambushing chiefs, despite their long-standing role as custodians of the people’s interests.
Speaking when Justice Minister Princess Kasune paid a courtesy call at his Ephendukeni Palace in Feni, Chief Mpezeni acknowledged some progressive elements in the bill, particularly those aimed at empowering women and youth.
However, he stressed the need for broader and more meaningful engagement with traditional authorities.
In response, Ms. Kasune said the UPND government is working to address constitutional gaps that have persisted over time, adding that previous administrations had also identified similar issues.
She explained that Bill 7 aims to promote inclusivity by creating additional constituencies for underrepresented groups, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
As the debate unfolds, stakeholders continue to weigh the bill’s potential benefits against concerns over transparency and procedural fairness.
