Rampant smuggling of mealie meal on the Copperbelt has continued with the latest being the seizure of one thousand eight hundred and ninety-six bags destined for Congo DR.
On Thursday, March 30 2023, the Anti-Smuggling team impounded 02 x Sino Trucks registration numbers BCE 773 maroon in color and BCD 5777 white in color laden with 947 and 949 bags of mealie meal in Chief Chiwala area.
Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Peacewell Mweemba, says the trucks were intercepted near Zambezi Portland Cement factory.
Mr. Mweemba adds that one of the trucks attempted to speed off but was impounded adding that Bupe Mutale, aged 36 of Chililabombwe, upon being detained claimed ownership of the 1896 bags.
