Over 1,000 illegal miners have vacated the Kikonge Gold Mine in Mufumbwe District following a stern warning from Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele.
Lieutenant General Zyeele warned illegal miners to leave the site or face forceful removal, a move aimed at restoring order and allowing registered cooperatives and artisanal miners to operate.
Residents have expressed mixed reactions, with some welcoming the move to curb accidents and crime, while others argue their livelihoods depended on illegal mining activities.
Authorities continue to work towards lawful mining while balancing community interests.
