Prosper Mwando Ng’andu, the Deputy Director in the Office of the President and Commissioner for Refugees, has appeared before the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court to face charges related to obtaining certificates under false pretenses.
Mr. Ng’andu is accused of presenting four individuals as asylum seekers, despite them not meeting the necessary criteria. The individuals involved in the alleged fraud are Hodari Samwela, Assani Feruzi Paula, Walwele Diabuk Gaby, and Ndayi Mwepu Jean.
Ng’andu has vehemently denied the allegations and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His legal team, led by prominent attorney Phil Muya, has successfully applied for bail pending trial before Magistrate Idah Phiri.
The case has sparked widespread interest and concern within the Zambian public, as it involves a high-ranking government official. The outcome of the trial will have significant implications for the integrity and credibility of the refugee resettlement process in Zambia.
As the legal proceedings continue, the public will be closely watching to see how the court addresses these serious allegations and whether the prosecution can prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
