The Zambian government has reassured the nation that the pollution incident involving Sino Metals Leach Zambia Limited is now under control, with no recorded deaths or ongoing health threats.
Speaking at a press briefing, Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa says the slippage of acidic tailings into key rivers in February 2025 has since been effectively contained through coordinated multisectoral efforts.
He says there is no need to press the panic button to alarm the nation and the International community.
The minister confirms that pH levels in affected water bodies have returned to normal, concentrations of heavy metals are declining, and necessary compensations to impacted communities are underway, as part of the polluter pays principle.
