Nkana Member of Parliament, Binwell Mpundu, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of seditious practices for allegedly publishing seditious words.
In this matter, Mr. Mpundu, an independent MP, appeared before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court over statements in which he allegedly claimed that Trevor Mwinde was behind the abduction of Honorable Jay Jay Banda.
According to prosecutors, the legislator went further on December 29, 2024, by urging fellow politicians to acquire firearms in readiness to defend themselves—comments authorities say were prejudicial to public order and capable of disturbing the peace, allegations the accused has denied.
Magistrate Webster Milumbe has since recorded a plea of not guilty, setting trial for October 13, 2025.
Mr. Mpundu joins other opposition Members of Parliament who faced the same charge of seditious practices and later lost their seats following convictions by the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court.
Those convicted include former Mfuwe MP Maureen Mabonga and former Lumezi MP Munir Zulu.
