ZAMBIA RECORDS FEWER ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES IN NEW YEAR TRAFFIC STATISTICS
Lusaka, Zambia – Zambia has recorded a significant decline in road traffic accidents and offences during the 2025 New Year period. This reflects progress in traffic safety initiatives and enforcement measures.
The Zambia Police reported 166 road traffic accidents over the holiday period, down from 262 in 2024. This 37% decrease highlights the impact of intensified road safety efforts.
Road traffic offences also dropped sharply from 1,340 in 2024 to 819 in 2025. The reduction signals better compliance with traffic regulations and more effective law enforcement.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga announced that K577,900.00 was collected in fines. This marks a decrease of 521 offences and K53,250.00 in fines compared to last year. Mr. Hamoonga said the decline shows fewer violations and growing road discipline among motorists.
The Zambia Police Service attributes the improvements to enhanced traffic management. Measures include deploying more officers at key points and introducing stricter penalties. Public awareness campaigns have further stressed safe driving and adherence to rules.
Mr. Hamoonga praised the collaboration between police, local authorities, and communities. He emphasized the role of non-governmental organizations and private sector partners in spreading road safety messages.
“These results are encouraging, but we must stay vigilant. Every life saved is progress for our nation. We urge motorists to remain cautious and responsible,” Hamoonga stated.
Authorities are optimistic that ongoing education and enforcement will lead to further reductions in traffic incidents. The Zambia Police Service remains committed to working with the public to keep roads safe.
As the country celebrates these gains, there is a shared call to sustain and expand road safety efforts. This aims to foster a culture where every journey is approached with care and caution.
