NDOLA WOMAN SWEPT TO DEATH IN FLOODED MARKET DRAINAGE

A tragic incident unfolded at Main Masala Market when 36-year-old Liness Mwitwa, a resident of Ndeke Township, drowned after being swept away by floodwaters in a drainage system during heavy rains.

Eyewitnesses reported that Mwitwa was attempting to cross the road after disembarking from a minibus when she slipped and fell into the open drainage. The floodwaters quickly carried her away, leading to a fatal outcome.

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that emergency responders, including police and fire brigade officers, managed to retrieve her body. Identification was made possible through hospital documents found with the deceased.

Contrary to circulating rumors, family members clarified that Mwitwa was not pregnant but had been battling a liver condition. Her body has been taken to the Ndola Teaching Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem will be conducted.

The tragedy has sparked concern among residents and traders over the safety of drainage systems in the city, particularly during the rain season.
