NAKONDE MAN LOSES HAND IN WORKPLACE ACCIDENT
A shocking workplace accident at Bacus Enterprises Limited, an iron sheet manufacturing company in Nakonde, has left 26-year-old Musonda Chisi severely injured and without his right hand. The young general worker was reportedly operating machinery when he inadvertently placed his hand into the equipment, which became trapped and caused catastrophic injuries.
The incident unfolded during routine operations at the factory, where Chisi had been employed. According to witnesses, the machine’s blades trapped his hand, causing extensive damage. Despite immediate efforts to rescue him, the injuries were too severe to save the limb.
Chisi was quickly rushed to Nakonde District Hospital, where medical staff worked tirelessly to stabilize his condition. However, due to excessive blood loss and the complex nature of the injury, he was later transferred to Chinsali General Hospital for advanced treatment and further care. Medical personnel have since confirmed that his condition is stable but that he will require extensive medical support in the coming weeks and months.
Muchinga Police Commanding Officer Dennis Moola confirmed the incident to Diamond News, noting that investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Authorities are focusing on whether adequate safety measures and training protocols were in place at Bacus Enterprises Limited to prevent such a tragedy.
This incident has raised serious questions about workplace safety standards, especially in high-risk industries such as manufacturing. Safety experts and labor advocates have emphasized the urgent need for employers to prioritize the well-being of their workers by implementing comprehensive safety protocols, maintaining equipment, and providing regular training to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Chisi’s tragic injury has sent shockwaves through the Nakonde community, with friends, colleagues, and local residents expressing their support for him and his family during this difficult time. Many have called for stricter enforcement of labor safety regulations to protect workers from preventable accidents.
Workplace accidents remain a pressing concern in Zambia, where industrial safety compliance is often overlooked. This case serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of neglecting safety in the workplace. As Chisi begins his long journey toward recovery, there is renewed hope that this incident will drive meaningful changes to improve safety standards and protect workers across the country.
The community has rallied behind Chisi, with many offering prayers and financial assistance to support his medical care and rehabilitation. His family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and is hopeful that he will recover his strength despite the life-altering injury.
This tragic accident highlights the urgent need for enhanced workplace safety measures to ensure that no worker has to endure such a harrowing experience again. Authorities and stakeholders in the manufacturing sector are being urged to take immediate action to prevent future tragedies
