Acidic levels in the Kafue River have stabilised following corrective measures after the February 18, 2025, pollution incident involving Sino-Metals Leach Zambia Limited, according to consultant Applied Science and Technology Associates.
However, ZEMA says Mwambashi and Chambishi streams remain highly contaminated, with unsafe acidic levels and residual pollutants, posing risks to domestic use, fishing and irrigation.
Speaking in Kitwe during the public disclosure of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment report, Environmental Toxicologist Dr. Titus Haakonde has called for urgent intervention in upstream water sources.
Dr. Haakonde has linked the pollution to temporary health effects reported in Kalulushi, including food poisoning and skin irritations.
The report has since recommended relocation of residents in Kalusale mining zone due to long-term health risks. And Sino-Metals has pledged to implement the recommendations.
