Former Malawian President Bakili Muluzi has withdrawn from his mediation role in resolving the impasse between the Zambian Government and the Lungu family over the burial site of former President Edgar Lungu.
In a statement dated November 11, 2025, Dr. Muluzi said efforts to facilitate direct dialogue among all parties did not fully succeed, and the matter remains unresolved.
He has since returned the issue to the family, the Zambian people, the Government, and other relevant processes to determine a respectful and fitting way forward.
Dr. Muluzi expressed gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, South Africa’s DIRCO, Graça Machel, Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda, and Bishop Joshua Banda for their diplomatic and moral support during the mediation.
He further urged continued prayers and compassion for former First Lady Esther Lungu, the children, and the extended family.
Mr. Lungu died on June 5, 2025, and has not yet been buried.
