A man of unknown age from Kkota Ward in Gwembe District, Southern Province, has drowned in Lake Kariba.
Kkota Ward Councillor Edward Gama identified the deceased as Cornelius Haminyongo, popularly known in the community as “Corn,” a resident of Hamatuba.
According to the civic leader, Mr. Haminyongo’s body was discovered floating in the lake by a group of his friends from nearby islands, where he spent much of his time engaged in fishing activities for his livelihood.
Gwembe District Commissioner Killion Chikandula has expressed concern over the increasing number of water accidents on the lake. He noted that many people, especially fishermen, use dugout canoes without life jackets, contributing to the continued incidents.
Police have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident
