A single mother from Namatama Ward in Livingstone District, Southern Zambia, is appealing for assistance to help with the treatment and care of her three-year-old son who is battling cancer.
Maureen Pisani says caring for her son has been extremely challenging since birth, as he was born with neuroblastoma and brain tumor.
She has told Diamond News that shortly after the child was born, the father abandoned them after failing to accept the child’s condition and has since refused to take responsibility. The man has since abandoned his family.
Ms. Pisani further explains that medical experts have informed her that, after several treatment attempts, there is little that can be done beyond managing the child’s pain with medication.
Meanwhile, Namatama Ward Councilor Kelvin Mambo has reiterated calls for support for the family.
Mr. Mambo has also confirmed that the child was recently included on the Social Cash Transfer beneficiaries list, although he has not yet started receiving support as authorities are still validating the approved names.
