LIGHT AIRCRAFT CRASHES IN KASEMPA, OCCUPANTS ESCAPE UNHARMED

A light aircraft crash-landed in Kabesha area, Kasempa District, on March 25, 2025, after its engine failed mid-flight.

The pilot deployed the parachute system, reducing the impact, and both occupants survived without injuries.

Kasempa Police reported that the incident happened around 14:00 hours and was reported 30 minutes later by Sharon Malata, an Emergency Response Nurse at Mukinge Mission Hospital.

The red Sling 4 aircraft, serial number 003 and registration number 9J-YUM, was flying from Mwinilunga to Lusaka. Pilot Daniel Rea, a 47-year-old engineer for Zengamina Power Company, and passenger Gertrude Okoph, a 34-year-old Kenyan national, were on board when the engine failed.

The aircraft crash-landed approximately 7.8 km from the M8 road and 200 meters from Old Kalulushi Road.

An African Parks helicopter from Mumbwa airlifted both occupants to Lusaka for medical evaluation before police arrived at the scene.

Officers secured the crash site and found the aircraft with a shattered front windshield, a deformed right wing, and a damaged left wing.

The Aircraft Accidents Investigations Board has launched an inquiry, and police continue to monitor the scene.
