The family of Lemekhani Nyirenda, a Zambian student who died at the battlefront of the Russia-Ukraine War, is satisfied with the results of a post-mortem conducted on their deceased son.

Family representative Dr. Ian Banda says his family is satisfied with the manner government facilitated the procedure of repatriation leading to the actual funeral.

Speaking during a memorial service at Lusaka’s Baptist Church, the deceased’s mother Florence Nyirenda says Lemekhani was an enthusiastic and prayerful young man who stood by his Christian tenets.

The 23-year-old, a student at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, had been serving nine years in prison for an alleged drug offence when he was later granted an amnesty to fight for Russian army but lost his life.

The remains of Lemekhani Nyirenda will be put to rest in Rufunsa District on 25th January 2023, four months after his death.

Despite government having disclosed that it would investigate the matter, there has been no public statement from Russian authorities on the matter.
