The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has urged society to do more to reform the prison system to alleviate the suffering of those that have fallen on the wrong side of the law, especially women.
Speaking during his visitation of the female section of Chimbokaila Correctional prison service in Lusaka as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, LAZ president Lungisani Zulu described women as the anchor of society and mothers who have been placed with a great responsibility on their shoulders.
Mr. Zulu has urged the judiciary to implement non-custodial sentences so as decongest prisons by commuting prison sentences to community service.
Mr. Zulu whose team donated various groceries to 158 women inmates and five circumstantial children, was accompanied by 17 lawyers from National Legal Aid Clinic for Women who conducted a mobile legal clinic for the women inmates.
