Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has announced another tragic fatality at its Chingola Open Pit operations in Nchanga mine, just a week after a previous mine accident claimed the life of an employee.

A 38-year-old dump truck driver, Stephen Daka, was found deceased by a mine investigation team a few meters from his vehicle. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation.

In light of these two consecutive fatalities, KCM management has made the decision to suspend operations at Chingola, Chililabombwe, Nampundwe, and Kitwe. This temporary suspension will allow for a thorough review of safety procedures and protocols across the company.

The Mines Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has expressed deep concern over the recent accidents and has urged KCM management to prioritize employee safety. MUZ President Joseph Chewe emphasized the importance of ensuring that all safety guidelines are strictly adhered to before resuming operations.

The tragic loss of life at KCM has raised questions about the safety standards in the mining industry and the need for continuous improvement in workplace safety measures. The suspension of operations provides an opportunity for KCM to conduct a comprehensive review and take necessary steps to prevent future accidents.
