20 Katete residents who assaulted police officers in Katete District in Eastern Province have been granted bail by the Chipata High Court.

The court’s Resident Judge Mercy Makubalo granted each of the accused bail in their own recognizance with two sureties who are of fixed aboard ascertained by either a headman or chief.

All the accused have met the bail conditions and have been released.

The accused group was last year denied bail by the Katete Magistrate Court on account that the situation in the area was still volatile.

This follows an incident in which an angry Katete mob attacked police officers that had been deployed to restore law and order following a dispute over an alleged release of murder suspects.
