A 14-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after being attacked by a stray elephant in Kasenengwa District of Eastern Province.
The incident occurred around 09:30 hours at Nyatube Village in Chief Madzimawe’s area.
The teenager was reportedly in the company of other youths when the elephant, which had earlier been spotted by villagers at a nearby graveyard, charged at them.
The elephant inflicted a deep cut and caused a fracture to the girl’s right thigh, leaving her with severe body pains.
She was rescued after villagers raised an alarm, whose noise scared the animal away.
Her mother, Margaret Daka, who is attending to her at Chipata Central Hospital, says doctors have described her condition as stable.
Following the incident, officers from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife pursued and killed the elephant involved.
