INFLATION EASES TO 12.3 % IN SEPTEMBER, GDP PICKS UP

.

The Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) has reported that annual inflation for September 2025 slowed to 12.3 percent, down from 12.6 percent recorded in August.

ZamStats Acting Statistician General, Sheila Mudenda, says the moderation was influenced by price movements in both food and non-food items.

Food inflation fell slightly to 14.6 percent from 14.9 percent in August, mainly on account of reduced prices in cereals such as mealie meal and maize grain, alongside selected fruits, vegetables, cooking oil and eggs.

Non-food inflation also declined to 9.0 percent from 9.3 percent, driven by changes in the cost of household appliances, pharmaceutical products, domestic airfares and accommodation services.

Meanwhile, ZamStats has also released updated economic performance figures showing that Zambia’s economy grew by 3.8 percent in 2024, compared to 5.4 percent in 2023.

.

For the second quarter of 2025, GDP expanded by 5.2 percent, a significant improvement from 1.9 percent during the same period last year, representing 3.3 percent year-on-year growth.
