Energy Minister Makozo Chikote told journalists at a briefing last month that Indeni Refinery cannot be recapitalised in its current state, describing it as scrap. He said it would be more prudent to invest in new technology rather than attempt to revive the existing facility.
Meanwhile, Secretary to the Treasury Felix Nkulukusa last week told the Parliamentary Committee on Parastatal Bodies that the transition of Indeni Energy Limited from an oil refinery into an oil marketing company was regrettable, noting that if given another opportunity, such a decision would not have been approved.
However, amid global tensions that have resulted in high fuel prices on the international market, calls are mounting for the government to reconsider its decision on the Indeni oil refinery.
