A 36-year-old man has died following a mining accident at the OB 13 KCM dumpsite in Chingola District after a tunnel collapsed while he was allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities.
Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer, Mwala Yuyi sayd the victim, Kelvin Musebo of Kapisha Compound, was buried alive when a pile of earth collapsed on a mining tunnel on the evening of May 31, 2026.
Mr. Yuyi says Musebo and his friend, Johnson Mubanga, 34, had gone to the dumpsite with other individuals to extract copper ore when the collapse occurred.
Mubanga was partially buried and was rescued by fellow miners, while Musebo was completely trapped beneath the debris.
The two were rushed to Nchanga North General Hospital, where Musebo was pronounced dead on arrival.
Mubanga was treated and later discharged after being found in stable condition.
Mr. Yuyi says police visited the hospital and confirmed the incident, a physical inspection of the body revealed no visible injuries, and a Bring-In-Dead form has since been issued.
An inquiry file has been opened, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
