President Hakainde Hichilema and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama have reaffirmed the historic Zambia–Ghana relationship rooted in the liberation legacy of Kwame Nkrumah and Kenneth Kaunda, agreeing that the partnership must now deliver tangible economic benefits.
Speaking during bilateral talks at State House in Lusaka, President Hichilema says the two countries must move beyond rhetoric and adopt an action-driven economic agenda that directly improves citizens’ lives.
The leaders identified priority areas of cooperation including gold and the wider mining sector, cost of capital, agriculture and trade, with President Hichilema stressing the need for practical, outcomes-based interventions.
He says while political cooperation remains important, President Hichilema emphasized that economic collaboration must take precedence.
And President Mahama says that Zambia and Ghana face similar economic challenges, particularly in mining and agriculture, adding that free trade requires clearly defined products and sectors for cooperation.
He adds that the two nations have much to learn from each other.
President Mahama has also wished President Hichilema well in the August 2026 general election, pledging to return to celebrate with him.
President Mahama arrived in Zambia on Wednesday, February 4, for a three-day State visit.
