President Hakainde Hichilema has intensified the call to end child marriage across Africa, urging governments to strengthen and harmonise laws to protect young girls from early and forced unions.
The Head of State challenged African countries to amend and enforce legislation that will decisively eliminate child marriage across the continent.
President Hichilema was speaking in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when he launched the AU Champion’s 2025 Report on Ending Child Marriage and the Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Programme Two.
The event was held on the sidelines of the African Union Summit for Heads of State and Government.
African Union Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Ambassador Amma Twum-Amoah, emphasised that ending child marriage requires determination, strong political will, and coordinated regional action to safeguard the rights and futures of Africa’s girls.
