Lusaka – The much-anticipated murder trial involving former Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Director General, Guntila Muleya, has been adjourned to April 11, 2025. The Lusaka High Court was scheduled to commence proceedings today, April 7, 2025, but the case was postponed due to the reported illness of one of the key accused individuals, Samuel Dokowe.
Muleya stands accused alongside three others in a high-profile case that has drawn significant public and media attention. The co-accused include two police officers—Mthusani Dokowe Basa and Caleb Zulu—alongside business executive Samuel Dokowe Basa and Francis Chipyoka, an accountant at the IBA.
The four are jointly charged with one count of murder, a charge that stems from an incident whose details are expected to be revealed during the trial. Although the specifics surrounding the murder case have not yet been disclosed, court documents indicate that all accused persons played alleged roles in the events leading to the death under investigation.
Today’s hearing was expected to mark the formal start of the trial, with witness testimonies and presentation of evidence scheduled. However, the court was informed that Samuel Dokowe Basa was unwell and unable to attend proceedings, prompting the presiding judge to adjourn the matter in the interest of fair trial standards and due process.
The postponement means the accused will remain in custody until the next hearing date, unless other bail proceedings are introduced and granted by the court.
Legal analysts note that the case is likely to be complex, given the involvement of high-profile individuals from law enforcement, business, and a public regulatory body. The trial is being closely followed due to its potential implications for institutional accountability and justice in Zambia.
The Lusaka High Court is expected to reconvene on April 11, 2025, when the case will resume—pending the recovery and availability of all accused persons.
