GUINEAN FOOTBALL FEDERATION DENIES CONTESTING MOROCCO’S 1976 AFCON TITLE

The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) has moved to put to rest circulating reports that Guinea is challenging Morocco’s 1976 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, describing the claims as inaccurate and baseless.

In an official statement, the FGF has confirmed it has not filed any procedure with either the Court of Arbitration for Sport or CAF regarding the 1976 AFCON.

The match between Guinea’s Syli National team and Morocco took place on March 14, 1976, in Addis Ababa, refereed by Zambian official Nyirenda Chayu, and ended 1-1.

Guinea took the lead through Chérif Souleymane in the 33rd minute before Morocco levelled through Ahmed Makrouh at the 86th minute.

The FGF has noted that the 1976 edition did not feature a traditional final as teams instead contested a final group stage, with Morocco topping it to be crowned champions and Guinea finishing as runners

Meanwhile, Morocco were granted a 3-0 victory by the CAF Appeals board last week, to be crowned 2025 AFCON Champions, following an appeal made contesting the ruling of the CAF Disciplinary board over the erupted chaos in the final against Senegal on 18 January, 2026.

The Senegalese Football Federation plans to contest this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
