Government has ordered Mwembeshi Resources Limited to stop mining activities in the disputed wildlife sanctuary, Lower Zambezi National Park.
Minister of Green Economy and Environment Collins Nzovu says the multiple inspections and reviews by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) disclosed that the company violated conditions in the Environmental Impact Assessment.
Mr. Nzovu adds that ZEMA has ordered the mining company to cease construction of roads, mining of gravel and foundations of any projects.
He notes that Mwembeshi Resources Limited has also been ordered to submit a site environmental restoration plan for the degraded environment in the sanctuary.
This comes after a consortium of Civil Society Organisations urged the government to be on the right side of the law by cancelling the license that was earmarked to displace wildlife and human settlements.
