GOVT ASSURES 10-HOUR POWER SUPPLY IN LOW-INCOME AREAS

.

The government has announced that households in low-income areas are now receiving at least ten hours of electricity daily.

Energy Minister Makozo Chikote, speaking on Diamond TV’s Costa programme on Sunday September 21, 2025, said the move is aimed at cushioning vulnerable communities that cannot afford alternative sources of energy.

He explained that residents in higher-income areas are being encouraged to invest in rooftop solar systems to supplement the national supply.

Mr. Chikote further disclosed that Zesco’s financial position remains weak, making it difficult for the utility to engage in power exports.

However, he clarified that Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) is currently exporting electricity to the Democratic Republic of Congo, using Zesco’s infrastructure.

The Minister also revealed that government is working to implement cost-reflective tariffs, saying this will strengthen the sector’s sustainability and attract more investment in the energy industry.
